Conservative Animal Welfare calls for mandatory mi
CAW has called for the mandatory microchipping of all dogs in the UK for several years. With the change in Government we are hopeful that this change in legislation will be soon be brought about.
We would like the microchip to be accepted as the definition of ownership and by inference responsibility.
CAW believes that a microchip should be taken as a registration of ownership and therefore, by definition a dog that is not microchipped is legally not owned.
We believe that this would simplify many situations and make it easier for the authorities to identify stray dogs, lost dogs and stolen dogs. If the definition is to be accepted then any dog this is not microchipped (by the time that it is weaned or at another identified time) then that dog is not legally owned.
Such legislation would have clear implications for those who use dog for fighting or for other criminal activities and would be of great assiustance both to the police and to animal welfare organisations as well as those pet owners who genuinely lose their dogs or have them stolen.
Such a move by the Government would be a significant step forward for animal welfare.
